ADJUSTMENT
NOTE
Slack adjusters are self-adjusting. Use this procedure when installing new slack adjusters
or when slack adjusters have been disconnected.
1.
Place clevis installation gage (Figure 4, Item 4) so it fits over body of larger clevis pin (Figure 4, Item 3).
2.
If slack adjuster is properly adjusted, a pencil can be placed into center of camshaft (Figure 4, Item 7)
through 6.0 in. (15.24 cm) slack hole (Figure 4, Item 8) of gage (Figure 4, Item 4). Notch in gage and smaller
clevis pin (Figure 4, Item 5) should also be aligned.
3.
Loosen jamnut (Figure 4, Item 9).
4.
Adjust the 0.75 in. slack adjuster nut (Figure 4, Item 2) in or out on air chamber shaft (Figure 4, Item 1) until
centers of 6.0 in. (15.24 cm) slack hole (Figure 4, Item 8) and camshaft (Figure 4, Item 7) are aligned.
Tighten jamnut (Figure 4, Item 9).
5.
WARNING
Ensure brake drum moves freely after adjustment. Failure to comply may result in death or
injury to personnel. Seek medical attention in the event of an injury.
6.
Turn adjusting screw (Figure 4, Item 6) clockwise until brake drum does not move. Back off adjusting screw
3/4 of a turn. Brake drum should move freely.
