ALIGNING AXLES
NOTE
On Semitrailer 1100 Series tri-axle suspension system only one of lower torque
rods for each axle is adjustable for axle alignment procedures. The other three
torque rods for each axle are fixed. Only one of the adjustable torque rods is
adjusted at a time
If the pinch bolt fasteners are badly corroded or damaged, remove and discard the
bolts and replace with new bolts.
1.
Starting with front axle, loosen torque rod eye pinch bolts on both ends of adjustable torque rod.
NOTE
If difficulty is encountered rotating the torque rod tube, the threaded ends may have
become corroded. Apply a quality penetrating oil to the threads. If difficulty is still
encountered, wedges may be driven between the eye lugs to release the clamping effect.
A chain type wrench is suggested when rotating the torque rod.
2.
Attach a pipe wrench to torque rod tube and rotate tube to either lengthen or shorten torque rod as required
until dimensions "D" and "D1" are equal within a tolerance of 0.166 in. (4.233 mm).
3.
Visually check rubber bushings to be sure that they are not distorted and are evenly distributed around
torque rod eye. If distortion is seen, neutralize (relax) bushing as previously described and
recheck dimension.
WARNING
Failure to torque fasteners to the specified torque may lead to fastener failure and
consequent loss of vehicle control. Failure to comply may result in death or injury to
personnel. Seek medical attention in the event of an injury.
4.
Tighten and torque, torque rod eye pinch bolts. If bolts were discarded, replace with new fasteners. Torque
0.5 in. UNC bolts to 65 lb ft (88.1 Nm) and 0.625 in. UNC bolts to 135 lb ft (183 Nm).
5.
Check distances "Y" and "Y1" between aligned axle and next rearward axle. If dimensions "Y" and "Y1" are
equal, no alignment is necessary. If dimensions "Y" and "Y1" are not equal, repeat Steps 1 through 4 to
align next axle.
6.
Repeat Step 5 for rear axle.
